OLLE WITT

Born 1998

"Drawing is, perhaps, the most accessible artistic medium – what you need is a material that produces colour and another material to imprint the first material onto. For me, this also means that drawing is one of the most natural mediums, and that it may therefore be able to bridge the divide between us and the world. As a result, the divide often appears in my drawings. For example, it may consist of a grading of the paper, or the space that appears when two surfaces are placed next to each other.

In my drawings, I attempt to describe what is essentially human; what we are before we enter a context. The accessibility of drawing is suitable for a performative approach – you don't need to arrange much in advance, and you can get started right away. I therefore often don't have a plan for what I'm going to draw, frequently resulting in an image where paper is added when the drawing wants to continue in a certain direction."

THE SELECTION COMMITTEE'S MOTIVATION:
Olle Witt sees drawing as the most accessible artistic medium. He often starts with no plan for what he is going to draw, but having studied philosophy, the history of ideas and art, it is clear that he is a thinker with a thinking hand. His motifs are just as much impressions of nature as rich abstract surfaces. When he needs more space, Witt joins one sheet of paper to the next, allowing the drawing to grow into a graphic grid in which the transitions illustrate the divide between us and the world that he is constantly attempting to bridge.
